The actors who will play the famous trio have been officially cast in HBO’s “Harry Potter” TV show. Sheila Duff will play Hermione Granger, Dominic McLaughlin will play Harry Potter, and Alastair Stout will play Ron Weasley. Since HBO put out an open call for actors last fall, more than 30,000 have tried out for the lead parts. The movie will likely start filming this summer.

In a press release, show runners Francesca Gardiner and Mark Mylod said, “We are thrilled to announce that we have found our Harry, Hermione, and Ron after an amazing search led by casting directors Lucy Bevan and Emily Brockmann.” “It’s amazing to see how talented these three young actors are, and we can’t wait for everyone to see how they work together on screen.” Our thanks go out to the tens of thousands of kids who tried out. It was a real treat to find so many talented young people out there.

Harry Potter Franchise

The Harry Potter franchise, based on J.K. Rowling’s seven-book series, follows the journey of young wizard Harry Potter and his friends at Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry as they battle the dark wizard Lord Voldemort. Beginning with “Harry Potter and the Philosopher’s Stone” (1997), the novels became a global cultural phenomenon, selling over 500 million copies worldwide in 80+ languages.

Warner Bros’ eight-film adaptation (2001-2011) grossed over $7.7 billion, making it one of the highest-grossing film franchises ever. The universe expanded with “Fantastic Beasts” films, the stage play “Harry Potter and the Cursed Child,” the Wizarding World theme parks, video games, and extensive merchandise.

The franchise revolutionized young adult literature, film marketing, and fan culture, creating an immersive world that continues to capture imaginations decades later. With HBO now developing a TV series adaptation, Harry Potter’s magical legacy shows no signs of fading.

In the early 2000s, Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint became famous all over the world as their “Harry Potter” characters. McLaughlin, Stanton, and Stout, who are mostly newbies, could become famous in the same way through HBO’s show. Stanton played the title part in “Matilda: The Musical” in London’s West End from 2023–2024, and McLaughlin stars in the upcoming Sky comedy “Grow” with Nick Frost and Golda Rosheuvel. The movie “Harry Potter” is Stout’s first big part.

Another actor in the cast is John Lithgow, who plays Albus Dumbledore in “Conclave” and “The Crown.” Janet McTeer, who plays Minerva McGonagall, is in “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” and “The White Queen.” Papa Essiedu, who has been in “I May Destroy You” and “Gangs of London,” plays Severus Snape. Nick Frost, who has been in “Shaun of the Dead” and “Hot Fuzz,” plays Rubeus Hagrid, Luke Thallon, who plays Quirinus Quirrell, and Paul Whitehouse, who plays Argus Filch, is in “The Fast Show” and “Harry & Paul.”

Author and director Gardiner is also in charge of producing and writing the “Harry Potter” series. Along with Brontë Film and TV and Warner Bros. Television, Mylod will be in charge of producing and directing several parts of the show for HBO. The show is made by Neil Blair, J.K. Rowling, Ruth Kenley-Letts of Brontë Film and TV, and David Heyman of Heyday Films.

Rowling, the author of the first “Harry Potter” books, has been criticized recently for her strong feelings about transgender people. Casey Bloys, HBO’s chief content officer, recently said on “The Town” podcast, “We already have a show on HBO called ‘C.B. Strike,’ which we do with the BBC. If my views on the trans community caused concerns for the show, that’s fine.” It’s clear that those are her very own political ideas. She has the right to have them. “Harry Potter” isn’t really full of any of those things. There is also Twitter where you can talk about her.

Both Olivia Bell and Public I work for Stanton, and Gavin Mills and Julie Gordon work for McLaughlin.
